What is a good Indian spicy dish that contains no curry?

Almost none of the popular spicy Indian dishes contain anything called curry powder.

I am an Indian and in the 46 years I have spent so far in my country, I started seeing u201ccurry powderu201d in the supermarkets only in the last six months or so.

Kenney-Herbert has written a book called Culinary Jottings for Madras and lists the following ingredients for curry powder - mace, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice and lemon grass.

,I am from Madras and we do not use these ingredients in any of our spice powders.

Cardamom and cinnamon are recent additions, they were too expensive for a normal household then.

Allspice and lemon grass we did not even know what they are until Internet came along.

,So curry powder is essentially a British invention suitable for their mild palates, they probably picked it from a rich Nawab of the Madras Presidency.

Funnily the curry powder recipe of the British does not even include the actual curry leaves, which IS a South Indian specialty.

,We do lot of spice mixes in India, curry powder is just one of them (although under different names and it varies from region to region) and not that famous either.
